What is Oud Made Of?

What is Oud Made Of?

What is oud made of? It is an oil from Agarwood trees that grow in parts of Southeast Asia. When the wood of these trees is infected by certain fungi, the tree produces a dark resin. That resin holds the distinctive scent we call oud.

Some people think oud is a type of wood, but that is incorrect. Oud refers to the fragrant resin within agarwood. Specialists often steam-distill agarwood chips to extract it. They may use around 20 kilograms of agarwood to produce 20 millilitres of oud.

You might see different colours in oud oils. Some appear light, while others are darker. Your own bottle may also have a slightly different scent, depending on the tree’s origin and age.

You can keep your oud in a cool spot and away from direct sunlight. This step helps preserve its aroma.
