What do fine wines and perfumes have in common? More than you might think. Just like a bottle of Bordeaux needs time to mature, so does your favourite fragrance.
But why do perfumes need to “marinate”?
When perfumes are first made, they’re a mix of concentrated oils and alcohol. If you were to spray it immediately after mixing, all you’d smell is sharp alcohol rather than a true fragrance.
And while the scent might improve after a few minutes, it won’t be as strong or long-lasting as it should be.
The thing is that oils and alcohol need time to blend smoothly to create a harmonious scent.
It takes at least three months for them to mix properly before they’re ready to be bottled and sold. During this time, the alcohol settles down, allowing the oils to combine and develop the rich aroma you expect from a fine fragrance.
So, the next time you're shopping for perfumes, especially online, make sure they've had enough time to mature. Your nose will definitely thank you!
